What's Montag’s relationship with Mildred like? Is this a typical marital relationship in your perspective? Use examples from the text to prove your point.
The author clearly showed that Montag and Mildred did not have a good relationship between them. When Montag entered the bedroom Montag said that, "It was like coming into the cold marble room of a mausoleum after the moon has set" (Bradbury 9). and describes that, "He was no happy" (Bradbury 9). Even when Montag came back from work, Mildred was laying on the bed, staring at the ceiling with the thimble radios tamped tight in her ears with music on. This explains that they have a relationship without love and this is not a typical marital relationship. Usually when one comes back home, it's normal to greet them and talk with them about the day. Also, once Montag read the book to Montag and her friend, she reported him, following her friends' actions. When the firemen arrived to their house, "Mildred came down the steps, running, one suitcase held with a dreamlike clenching rigidity in her fist, as a beetle-taxi hissed to the curb" (Bradbury 108). This shows how she did not warn Montag about the firemen and she was ready to leave Montag and run away by herself when convenient. It displays how Montag and Mildred's marriage was and that this should not be how a marital relationship should look like.
Montag and Mildred do not have a typical marital relationship because he never seemed happy when he was home. For example, Mildred asked him if he was happy and he started to question it "Of course I'm happy. What does she think? I'm not?" (Bradbury 10). Also when he was talking to Clarisse she told him that she knew he wasn't really in love and his response was "I am, very much in love!" He tried to conjure up a face to fit the words, but there was no face." (Bradbury 22). He could say he was in love all he wanted but it never showed on his face. The fact that they slept in separate beds and when Montag asked Mildred about when they met she couldn't remember and then said it didn't matter shows their marital relationship isn't your typical one. His response to her was "Funny, how funny, not to remember where or when you met your husband'r wife." (Bradbury 43). I do not think that Mildred really cares for Montag because she reported him to the authorities and then was planning to leave him and didn't really care about what was going to happen to him even though at the beginning of the book when Mildred took all the pills he was concerned about her and called the hospital. He could have let her die but didn't because he cares about her even though I don't think he is in love with her "He felt his lips move, brushing the mouthpiece of the phone. "Emergency hospital." A terrible whisper." (Bradbury 14). This shows that Montag does care for Mildred but she doesn't seem very into the marriage and is willing to just let him get punished for taking the book, thus proving that their marriage is not typical, but also one sided.
(add) If Mildred was really caring for Montag, she would have tried to understand why he is trying to read books and accept books. However, she was only worried about how their house might get burnt once they are caught and of her friends' pressure of hating on books and telling Beatty about Montag. She was never there for Montag even when he was there for her when she was in her phase.
REPLY FOR BOTH: To begin with, I agree with Cerra when she says "The fact that they slept in separate beds and when Montag asked Mildred about when they met she couldn't remember and then said it didn't matter shows their marital relationship isn't your typical one " ( Carrillo 1). This answer the question because this is an explaiton of the quote (evidence) that Montag and Mildred's relaitonship that it is not a typical one. I also liked how Cerra added her own personal opinion to her repsponse to this quesiton because when she wrote, "I do not think that " (Carrillo 1). THis shows that Cerra really knows what she is talking about and on point to prove her point ! Now for Rebekah, I liked it when she wrote , "that they have a relationship without love and this is not a typical marital relationship " ( Huh 1). This means that one you read her explanation of when she write about the cold marble room , is a very well executed explanation/ evidence because this shows / illistrates how when Montag comes home from work , he come home to a room with Mildred, not a room with his " wife." This shows Mildred's relationship with Montag. Meaning that if she really cared for him, she would have supported his perspective of books.
