If you trace Winston's path towards his own demise and destruction (him beginning to love Big Brother), where do you first see him start to submit to his fate? Do you think his defeat was inevitable?
I believe that his defeat was inevitable. This form of torturing people into submission had been practiced on many other converted individuals. I believe that Winston firsts starts to question weather he is against Big Brother or not is half way through the torture sessions. He does not truly break and join Big Brother until after he had betrayed Julia. On page 236 he is about to have the rats forced upon him, during one of his torture sessions, and he starts to cry out to not do it on him but instead to do on Julia. This was the last tie that he had on his belief of freedom. After putting himself before Julia is when he truly believes the Party. He longer has anyone he cares for therefore the only thing he can love after that is the Party. - Isabel
I agree Isabel, Winston tried to fight the torture forced upon him but his (and Julia's for that matter) fate was sealed long before the sessions of torture even started. The Party and Big Brother figured out how to break people really well and Winston is an antihero so he was no exception.
