I think Julia is a foil character to Winston. They are similar in the fact that they both rebel against the Party, but they are different in many ways. First, Julia is young, energetic, and attractive, while Winston is older than her, and therefore physically weak and unattractive. Also, Julia and Winston rebel for opposite reasons. Julia rebels in search of her freedom; she wants good things in life. Winston rebels on a much more philosophical level. He wants to see the Party defeated and society “restored.” He thinks about the big picture, not his own personal needs like Julia does. Lastly, Julia is much more carefree than Winston. While he ponders over the thought of death, Julia prefers not to think about it at all. When he brings up the topic, she keeps a playful attitude, and she even tells him “Then stop thinking about dying” (Orwell 136). Winston and Julia, while wanting the same thing, are completely different people. These differences are probably what caused the hatred Winston felt at the beginning of the novel. “Winston had disliked her from the very moment of seeing her” (Orwell 10). He disliked her so much because she was everything he wasn’t: young, attractive, and talented.
(No Grade) I believe that Julia and Winston indeed have very few similarities other than they both want to rebel against the Party. Julia is more rebellious and cocky. She believes that she would never get caught doing anything bad because she was so confident in her ability to be sneaky. She has that sense of Teenage rebellion that can be reckless without a thought of consequences. I agree with Julia on her way to describe the character of Julia. Winston I believe is just looking for a friend to share his feelings with. He does think of the consequences but his need for a friend is more than he wants o admit. Both characters are entirely different I believe.
