Within the setting of Brave New World and its theme, which involoves control, what is the significance of soma for the government and how is this portrayed in the scene with John throwing out the soma for the Deltas?
The significance of soma is that it is the only surefire way that they can remain a strong hold on the citizens of the "new world" because from the artificial birth of all of the people, they have been given doses of soma since a young age. Although the book claims it has no negative side affects it is still a drug that makes dopamine levels rise causing people to get addicted from the feeling. Thus causing the whole world to be addicted to soma and the fact that the government regulates the distribution means they control the people with soma making their grip stronger. This is portrayed as the delta children scream in anger as he throws the soma out the window.
I think that the use of soma could be examined in two ways 1. The drug used as a way to give people an escape from their lives to a vacation however far away they want. However according to mustapha mond each class is specificly designed to be happy in their own place which would imply that they never need a vacation. 2. The drug is addictive for instance when john threw out the soma the delta were pretty close to revolting, and why when linda was lost in the savage reservation she resorted to useing mescaline (interesting personal implications to Aldous Huxley) and when she came back to the society she took soma until she died.
