The imagery and sensory details give the novel an atmosphere. The way the author described the setting set the tone for the novel. “In the long gray dusk they crossed a river and stopped and looked down from the concrete balustrade at the slow dead water passing underneath” (McCarthy 159). This is just a scene from where they are travelling. This quote shows the dark depressing tone that the novel has, especially when the word gray comes up. “…The days more gray each on than what had gone before. Like the onset of some cold glaucoma dimming away the world” (1). This is one of the quotes that expresses what the darkness actually feels like and immerses the readers into the story. Although not everyone has glaucoma, some can feel the pressuring darkness that is blinding their hope and will to live. There are some regular and warm moments such as, “The salt wood burned orange and blue in the fire’s heart and he sat watching it a long time. Later he walked up the beach, his long shadow reaching over the sands before him…” (237). This imagery gives the readers an new tone to see the story in. Although imagery and sensory details are powerful literary devices, I think the dialogue is another key device that help moved the story along. The sensory details and imagery let the audience follow and feel what the characters are feeling like they are in the novel with them.

In addition to that, by understanding the use of the key devices such as imagery and sensory detail, we were able to ask questions about the novel and analyze the storyline even more. Were able to make assumptions and see how literary devices impact character development as well as make us feel as if we were them. The imagery set the tone of the story, respectively I agree with how you think the sensory detail also gives the novel an atmosphere too! Another good quote that helped me understand the story was “He woke in the dark of the woods in the leaves shivering violently. He sat up and felt for the boy. He helps his hand to the thin ribs. Warmth and movement. Heartbeat. “ (McCarthy 116) With the scene in the story I analyzed that the world is a cold and illucid world however anything of color or heat represented the good in the world. I do think dialogue is another important device because it did helped show the relationship of the man and boy however the author remained very vague and because it shows that it wasn’t important enough to go in depth with.
