This quote symbolizes the party because it shows their ‘backwards way’ of thinking. “O’Brien lifted the grating. Unseen, the frail slip of paper was whirling away on the current of warm air; it was vanishing in a flash of flame…’It does not exist. It never existed’” (Orwell 204). “The earth is as old as we are, no older…Outside man there is nothing” (Orwell 218, 219). “The earth is the center of the universe. The sun and the stars go around it… For certain purposes, of course that is not true… we often find it convenient to assume that the earth goes round the sun” (Orwell 219). “The so-called laws of nature are nonsense” (Orwell 229). These quotes all show the ideas of the party, to most people nowadays their ideas seem nonsensical and crazy but it is what they believe. These ideas are what makes the party, they are the building blocks of the party. The given quote gives us more understanding of what the party stands for because it shows they want the power to say anything is possible. “The party seeks power entirely for its own sake…we are interested solely in power” (Orwell 217). “We, the party, control all records, and we control all memories. Then we control the past” (Orwell 205). These quotes all show that the party wants complete power and control; they want to have the power to say the sky is purple and everyone will believe it. It is not the ideas that matter to them; the only thing they care about is that the people believe what they say with no questioning or uncertainty.

Having individuals believe in, two plus two equaling five, shows the parties power and control they have over everything. “Whatever the Party holds to be the truth, is truth. It is impossible to see reality except by looking through the eyes of the Party.” (Orwell 314). When the party declares that two plus two equals five is an example of the many ways of how party controls the truth. Agreeing with Ellen how the quote given shows how anything is possible. In the party’s mind, they have the thought of wanting complete control and power. Ellen said how the party wants to be able to say something and have the people believe in it without questioning. I agree with that statement completely; the fact that the party has the power to tell you anything and all the individuals go along with what they have said will show they have to complete power over them. And the quote “Two and two make five” (Orwell 228) is a great example of the party telling the comrade’s a phrase in which they shall go by, and the people accepting it without fighting against the power.
ReplyDeleteThe statement that two and two make five shows the party's ability to warp reality and impose such warped thoughts on the citizens. "We, the party, control all records, and we control all memories. Then we control the past" (Orwell 205). The previous quote states the symbolism of 2+2=5 within the story. It shows the party's ideals in controlling not just the memories, records, etc., but how they think and view the world that surrounds them. With this kind of control, they hold complete power over every citizen, even those who rebel, such as Winston. It gives the understanding that the party is ruthless and willing to do anything, even break a person's spirit and mind in order to maintain this control.

I agree with all of you because it is true that the party has ultimate control over everyone in the party. Even WInston's occupation requires him to alter to past so there is no question about inacurrate texts or news for the present. The constantly changing allies and enemies within the war is a perfect example of how thoughtless the residents are in the community-- which is exactly what the party wants.
