I think the reason the party makes everyone call each other comrade is so that no one feels special or unique, so that people feel no emotions at all. “Ours is founded upon hatred. In our world there will be no emotions except fear…We have cut the links between child and parent, and between man and man, and between man and woman…There will be no love” (Orwell 220). This shows they want to get rid of all emotions so people will not be able to feel anything, they are ‘reshaping’ people in order to create their perfect world. I think getting rid of names is a small step towards this goal of no emotions and that is why they require everyone to call each other comrade. I think that most people see names as something that makes them special and only belongs to them, it gives them a sense of individualism, they may even love and cherish their name or the name of another. But if you take that away and everyone is known as the same thing, it makes them feel unimportant and no different from other people. They feel no special connectedness, no emotional bond with their name, and so the party has managed to get rid of any emotion regarding names. In a sense they are trying to create complete control through calling everyone comrade so the people all feel no emotions. “Mrs. was a word somewhat discountenanced by the party- you were supposed to call everyone ‘comrade’” (Orwell 20, 21). I think it’s a sign that they already have complete control, because they have the ability to tell everyone to call each other comrade and they obey.
The word comrade means an acquaintance, friend, and/or family all share one's activities or is also a member of an organization. To have the community call everyone ‘comrade’, would be an act to try control the people. They are trying to build a totalitarian government were under ones ultimate authority will control everyone in create a united community. I agree with Ellen, how the party it taking control of everyone’s emotions. Taking away the emotions and rights the people have is helping the party shape the new world. “Perhaps ‘friend’ was not exactly the right word. You did not have friends nowadays, you had comrades” (Orwell 62). Shows how they control close to everything you can do in your life. I also agree with Ellen in the fact that the party already has complete control over everyone with the ability of control they have over everyone and how every person follows what the party tells them to do.
Comrade is defined as "a companion who shares one's activities or is a fellow member of an organization". At surface value, everyone is everyone's comrade. The party's enforcement of the use of the word shows its will to separate emotional connection between humans. "Perhaps ‘friend’ was not exactly the right word. You did not have friends nowadays, you had comrades" (Orwell 62). This quote shows how without the emotions that we link with friendship, and the term friend, we only view each other as comrades, and nothing more. This is a tactic from the party to increase its influence over everybody in Airstrip One. The party's main goal is to keep control over its people, and has found how to through the removal of individual thoughts and emotions. By using the word comrade, it only increases their control.

Another example involving the use of this word is “(’Mrs’ was a word somewhat discountenanced by the Party you were supposed to call everyone ‘comrade’ but with some women one used it instinctively.” (Orwell 26). And this comment demonstrates that no one should be special that they should all be comrade. Like all of you had previously said they use this to create a total control, because if you call everyone comrade no one can feel special and it is harder to create connection to band together against Big Brother and the Party. Also just to say more this is a comment on the Soviet Union and communism at the time because this was a word that was used in that area very commonly.
