Thematic Resonance and The Road - Wilson, Brooke
For those who have not read the novel, below is an insightful glimpse into the shrowded realm which has been identified as 'The Road'; through travels along a desolate North American landscape, two surviving souls journey through the burnt wreckage portraying dismal prospects to the future and minimal happiness, along with lacking a prosperous, substantial existense into the corrupted oblivion:
“He walked out in the gray light and stood and he saw for a brief moment the absolute truth of the world. The cold relentless circling of the intestate earth. Darkness implacable. The blind dogs of the sun in their running. The crushing black vacuum of the universe. And somewhere two hunted animals trembling like ground-foxes in their cover. Borrowed time and borrowed world and borrowed eyes with which to sorrow it.” (McCarthy, 147).
What if there was a near-complete breakdown within the complex networks joining humans with one another and with other species? Do people have a chance to carry a spark for a greater existence and pursposeful enlightenment?
“Perhaps, within world destruction, the possibilites could occur to at last to observe how the terrain and was created. Oceans, mountains. The ponderous counterspectacle relating to things ceasing to be. The sweeping waste, hydroptic and coldly secular. The silence.” (McCarthy, 87).
Could the man have the capability to inflict such an arduous pain to the only lighted source in his world (his son) in order for him to escape harm and defilation before evil immensities and a worse fate cripple his willing pursuit to live, and would he be able to deal with his remaining existence alone?
